Garfield County, Utah (August 18, 2019) – A motorcyclist was killed in a head-on crash earlier this month at the southern edge of Panguitch, a local news source reported.

The fatal crash was reported just before 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 8, on state Route 143 near mile marker 50.

UHP said 68-year-old Kevin S. Barnhurst, of Panguitch, was riding a motorcycle southbound on the highway when he was hit by a northbound Toyota pickup truck. The truck driver reportedly crossed the center line and struck the bike head-on.

Barnhurst was declared dead at the scene.

Investigators said drowsy driving was a possible factor in the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.

UHP said the man was riding a motorcycle southbound at a high rate of speed when he hit a bicycle rack on the back of a vehicle. The impact caused him to lose control. The vehicle he ran into fled the scene.

Officers said alcohol was a possible contributing factor in the crash.

The man was airlifted to a Salt Lake hospital with major head injuries. He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
